There were 15 schools that competed at the Duane Rau Memorial Invitational at Ogemaw Heights on Thursday, August 31. Alpena had a chance to put their summer of long, hard miles to use on the course during their first race of the season. The Alpena boys came away with the title on Invitational Champions with Juniors, Aden and Josh Smith leading their pack with 1st and 2nd place finishes. Freshman Drew Seabase and Junior Sam Tuscher were also in the top 10. Finishing off the varsity 7 were Junior Jimmy Decker, Junior Zachary Zaborney and Senior leader and captain, Nic Timmreck. The boys team scored a total of 28 points in front on 2nd place team, Ogemaw with 78 points. Last year, the boys team also won this Invitational with graduate, Mitchell Day, winning the race and setting the course record. This 2017 team has stepped up their game scoring only 1 point more than the 2016 team. The Alpena girls team had a strong showing with 6 of their varsity runners returning from last season. Maddy Boyd stole the show leading the race and finishing with a career best time of 19:23. She was the 1st place female by 54 seconds over the 2nd finisher from Sault Ste Marie. The girls were missing varsity runner, Anna Young, but filled in well with Sophmore Molly Dickinson, Freshman Tiffany Foster, Sophmore Kaylee Rondeau, Sophmore Malley McGuire, Sophmore Grace Weaver and Sophmore Katie Faoust. The Alpena girls team placed 2nd behind Champions Sault Ste Marie. Aden Smith, Josh Smith and Maddy Boyd earned themselves additional honors by placing among the Top 100 Times run on that particular course. The times have been accumulated for the last 30 years. The teams will compete next on Saturday, September 9 in Bullock Creek at the Lancer Invitational.
